From personal struggle to a pioneering vision

Bruce Herring was a spirited, active individual, embracing life with motorbikes and travel. His world changed dramatically after a  stroke in 2017 leading to the amputation of his left leg. Confined to a wheelchair, he experienced first-hand the daunting challenges of navigating urban environments. He quickly realised that cities were not built for everyone, discovering the critical lack of accurate information regarding drop kerbs – a vital lifeline for those with mobility challenges, parents with prams, and the elderly.

A legacy of accessibility: the kerb finder story

Behind Kerb Finder is a deeply personal journey, born from a need for greater accessibility and a commitment to helping others. Discover the inspiring story of our founder, Bruce Herring, and the enduring passion that drives our mission.

The birth of an idea and a promise upheld

Inspired by his own struggles and a new zest for life, Bruce conceived Kerb Finder – a revolutionary idea to map accessible routes between drop kerbs. With assistance and funding from SOSE, he began to turn his passion into a reality. Tragically, Bruce passed away on 18th January 2026 after contracting acute pneumonia which lead to a cardiac arrest. Before he left us, he extracted a solemn promise from his wife, Sheryl, and his PA, Wendy: to continue his work and successfully launch Kerb Finder. We are honoured to develop this site and app in his name, initially serving Dumfries and Galloway, with plans for national and international expansion.

Safety in every step: why kerb finder matters

Bruce’s personal journey starkly illuminated why Kerb Finder is so crucial for people navigating cities. It is currently dangerous for many to travel, as existing drop kerbs often don't align or, in some cases, are completely absent near essential accessibility points like disabled parking spaces. Kerb Finder addresses this critical gap, providing essential information to ensure safer, easier, and more dignified passage for wheelchair users, those with mobility aids, pushchairs, and anyone who relies on accessible pathways. We are committed to making our cities truly accessible for all.

"Developed with passion and as an essential tool for disabled and drop kerb users."
